Overview of Iron Ore Testing
- Tested by
- NABL-accredited partner lab
- Regulation
- IS & ISO ore methods
- Typical turnaround
- 3–5 working days
- Sample needed
- 2–5 kg, sealed
Iron ore is bought and sold on its Fe content, with penalties for silica, alumina, phosphorus and sulphur, which raise slag volume and fuel use or weaken the steel. Moisture decides the dry tonnage paid for, and size distribution decides whether material goes to the blast furnace, sinter plant or pelletising. The grade also matters for royalty and, for some grades, export duty.
Mines, traders, sponge iron and steel plants and exporters test each rake, stockpile or shipment. Representative sampling and sample preparation under recognised methods matter as much as the analysis, because ore varies across a lot. Pellets are also tested for cold crushing strength, tumbler index and reducibility.
