- Part or cut section
Chemical composition and hardness do not tell the whole story. A polished and etched section under the microscope shows the microstructure left by casting, forging, welding and heat treatment, and whether it matches the drawing. Common checks include grain size (ASTM E112), non-metallic inclusion rating (ASTM E45 or IS 4163), case depth of carburised and induction-hardened parts, decarburisation and nodularity in cast iron.
When a part cracks or breaks, failure analysis combines fractography, metallography, hardness and chemistry to identify the cause, whether fatigue, overload, a material defect or a processing fault. Automotive and engineering suppliers use these tests for PPAP and customer complaints. Strength properties are covered by mechanical testing.
What we do for you
- Lab and parameter list chosen for your purpose: licence, export, buyer or internal QC
- Sampling guidance, and pickup or on-site sampling where needed
- One contact who follows up with the lab until the report is issued
- Report explained in plain language, with next steps if a result fails
