Each industry buys minerals on a few key constituents. Limestone and dolomite are graded on CaO, MgO and silica for cement, steel and lime. Bauxite is valued on alumina and reactive silica for alumina refining and refractories. Manganese ore and chromite are graded on Mn and Cr2O3 with their iron ratio for ferro-alloys, rock phosphate on P2O5 for fertiliser plants, and graphite on fixed carbon.
Mining leaseholders use grade data for mine planning and statutory returns, while traders and plants use it for pricing and blending. Analysis combines XRF for major oxides with classical wet chemistry, LOI and moisture, and trace elements by ICP where buyers limit them.
