Overview of Mechanical Testing of Metals
- Tested by
- NABL-accredited partner lab
- Regulation
- IS 1608, IS 1586, IS 1757
- Typical turnaround
- 3–5 working days
- Sample needed
- Specimens per standard
Mechanical tests show whether a metal will carry its design load. The tensile test (IS 1608) gives yield strength, ultimate strength and elongation. Hardness is measured by Brinell (IS 1500), Rockwell (IS 1586) or Vickers methods, and the Charpy impact test (IS 1757) shows toughness, especially at low temperatures.
Construction projects test TMT bars under IS 1786 for strength grade, elongation, bend and rebend and chemical composition, often on site samples taken by the consultant. Fabricators qualify welders and weld procedures, foundries test castings, and buyers check fasteners and structural steel against the mill test certificate.
