Under the National Policy on Biofuels, oil marketing companies blend ethanol into petrol and buy biodiesel and compressed biogas (CBG) from producers. Each has a BIS specification: anhydrous ethanol for blending under IS 15464, biodiesel (B100) under IS 15607 and biomethane under IS 16087. Supplies that fail are rejected at the depot.
Distilleries and grain-based ethanol plants test every batch for water content, acidity and methanol. Biodiesel made from used cooking oil, a route FSSAI and the oil companies promote, is checked for ester content, free glycerol and oxidation stability. CBG plants under the SATAT scheme test methane content and impurities before supplying to city gas networks or CBG stations.
