Per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS) are used for water, grease and stain resistance in textiles, paper packaging, non-stick coatings and fire-fighting foam. They barely break down, build up in people and the environment, and are linked to health effects. PFOS and PFOA are restricted globally under the Stockholm Convention.
The EU restricts PFAS in products under its POPs and REACH regulations, several US states ban PFAS in food packaging, textiles and other products, and the US has set drinking water limits. Indian exporters of garments, home textiles, leather, paper packaging and chemicals are being asked for PFAS reports by their buyers. Tests measure individual PFAS by LC-MS/MS, and total organic fluorine as a screen.
