Overview of GMO Testing
- Tested by
- NABL-accredited partner lab
- Regulation
- FSSAI import order
- Typical turnaround
- 5–7 working days
- Sample needed
- 500 g–1 kg
FSSAI requires imports of specified food crops, including soybean, maize, canola, wheat, rice and several others, to be accompanied by a non-GM origin and GM-free certificate. Exporters to Europe and buyers of non-GMO ingredients also ask for test reports, because GM material in a lot can trigger labelling requirements or a rejection.
Real-time PCR screens DNA for common genetic elements used in GM crops, such as the 35S promoter and NOS terminator, and can then identify specific GM events. Highly refined products such as oils may contain too little DNA to test, which the lab will tell you in advance.
