Overview of Nutrition Labelling Testing

Tested by
NABL-accredited partner lab
Regulation
FSS (Labelling & Display) 2020
Typical turnaround
5–7 working days
Sample needed
500 g or 3 retail packs

The FSS (Labelling and Display) Regulations, 2020 require most packaged foods to declare energy, protein, carbohydrate, total sugars, added sugars, total fat, saturated fat, trans fat, cholesterol and sodium per 100 g or 100 ml, and per serve with its contribution to the recommended dietary allowance. Any vitamin, mineral or other nutrient mentioned in a claim must also be declared.

Claims such as “high protein”, “low fat”, “sugar free” or “source of fibre” have specific thresholds under the FSS (Advertising and Claims) Regulations, 2018, and the declared value must be supported by analysis. We test the full panel and flag any claim your result does not support.

What we do for you

Frequently asked questions

Can nutrition values be calculated instead of tested?

Calculated values from reliable databases are sometimes used, but analysis of the actual product is the safest basis, especially for claims. Many brands test once per recipe and repeat when the recipe or supplier changes.

How are added sugars measured?

Total sugars are measured in the lab. Added sugars are worked out from the recipe, by subtracting sugars that come naturally from ingredients such as milk or fruit, so we ask for the formulation along with the sample.

Will FSSAI and buyers accept the report?

Tests are done in labs accredited by NABL for the parameters reported, and for regulatory use in FSSAI-notified labs, which is what FSSAI, food safety officers and most buyers expect. For export, we match the lab to the importing country’s or buyer’s requirement.

Who carries out the testing?

Instacertify’s partner laboratories, accredited by NABL to ISO/IEC 17025 for the parameters on your report. We choose the lab, arrange the sample, follow up until the report is issued and explain the results to you.
