A probiotic only works if the right strain reaches the consumer alive. FSSAI’s regulations for health supplements and nutraceuticals list the probiotic strains that may be used and expect the viable count declared on the label to be met through shelf life. Counts fall with heat and moisture, which makes Indian storage conditions a real test of the formulation and packaging.
Testing combines viable counts on selective media, strain identification by DNA sequencing so you know the organism is the one you paid for, and screening for contaminating organisms. Running counts across a shelf-life study shows whether your claim holds.
