Overview of Spices & Condiments Testing
- Tested by
- NABL-accredited partner lab
- Regulation
- FSSAI & Spices Board
- Typical turnaround
- 7–10 working days
- Sample needed
- 500 g per spice or blend
Each spice has an FSSAI standard for moisture, total ash, acid-insoluble ash (a measure of sand and dirt) and, for aromatic spices, volatile oil. Ground spices are also a long-standing target for adulteration: brick powder in chilli, lead chromate and metanil yellow in turmeric, papaya seeds in black pepper and non-permitted dyes such as Sudan red in chilli powder.
After several countries recalled Indian masala blends in 2024 over ethylene oxide, a fumigant not permitted in food, exporters now test for it together with pesticide residues and aflatoxin before shipment. We match the parameter list to FSSAI for the domestic market and to the importing country’s limits for export.
