FSSAI’s Food Products Standards and Food Additives Regulations list which additives may be used in each food category, and at what maximum level. Only a short list of synthetic colours is permitted, such as sunset yellow, tartrazine, carmoisine and brilliant blue, and only in certain foods. Non-permitted dyes such as Sudan red, metanil yellow and rhodamine B are among the most common adulterants found in sweets, spices and sauces.
Preservatives such as benzoic acid, sorbic acid and sulphur dioxide, artificial sweeteners, antioxidants like BHA and TBHQ, and flavour enhancers such as MSG are measured and compared with the limits for your product category.
