Overview of Tea Testing
- Tested by
- NABL-accredited partner lab
- Regulation
- FSSAI & Tea Board
- Typical turnaround
- 7–10 working days
- Sample needed
- 250 g per grade
FSSAI’s tea standard sets limits for total ash, water-soluble ash, acid-insoluble ash, water extract and crude fibre, which together show whether the tea is genuine leaf, properly processed and free from excess stalk and dust. Tea must not contain added colour, and magnetic tests pick up iron filings that enter during CTC processing.
Pesticide residues are the main export risk. The Tea Board’s Plant Protection Code lists the chemicals estates may use, while Europe, Japan and other markets apply their own maximum residue limits. Packers and exporters test each lot before blending or shipment.
