Which Safety Mark Is Mandatory in India? ISI, CRS, BEE & Hallmark by Product
"Which mark is necessary on electrical appliances?" "Which safety mark is standard on helmets?" These questions appear in exams, but also on the desks of importers and manufacturers deciding what to print on a label.
The short answer: most safety-critical goods in India need a BIS mark. Products such as helmets, appliances, fans and cement use the ISI mark, and electronics and IT goods use the Standard Mark with an R-number under CRS. Energy-using products may also need a BEE star label, and gold jewellery needs a BIS hallmark.
Below is a product-by-product guide, followed by a quick way to check any product yourself.

Mandatory status depends on the current Quality Control Order or CRS notification, and dates are often extended. Check the latest position in our mandatory BIS standards library and mandatory CRS standards list.
Which Mark Is Necessary on Electrical Appliances?
It depends on whether the product is an electrical appliance or an electronic or IT product:
- Household electrical appliances such as irons, kettles, mixers, toasters, water heaters and room heaters need the ISI mark under the IS 302 series, as notified in the appliance Quality Control Order.
- Electronic and IT goods such as adaptors, TVs, laptops, set-top boxes and speakers need the Standard Mark with an R-number under the BIS Compulsory Registration Scheme.
- Energy-using appliances such as ACs, refrigerators, fans, water heaters and TVs may also need a BEE star label. This shows efficiency, not safety.
So in an exam the expected answer is usually "ISI mark". In practice, check the exact product, because many items now sit under CRS. Our CRS guide explains that route.
Which Safety Mark Is Standard on Helmets?
The ISI mark. Protective helmets for riders of two-wheelers must conform to IS 4151 and carry the ISI mark with a valid licence number. Selling or making non-ISI two-wheeler helmets is not allowed. Look for the CM/L number under the mark and verify it in the BIS Care app.
Which Standard Applies to Ceiling Fans?
IS 374 covers electric ceiling type fans, and they need the ISI mark. Ceiling fans are also covered by BEE's star labelling programme, so a typical fan box carries both the ISI mark and a BEE star label.
Is the ISI Mark Required on Water Bottles?
It depends on what "water bottle" means:
- Packaged drinking water sold in sealed bottles or jars no longer has to carry the ISI mark under IS 14543. FSSAI removed the requirement on 17 October 2024; the plant needs an FSSAI licence, and the ISI mark is now voluntary.
- Packaged natural mineral water under IS 13428 is in the same position: an FSSAI licence is required and the ISI mark is voluntary.
- An empty reusable bottle is a different product. Whether it needs a mark depends on its material and type and on any current Quality Control Order, so check before you import or sell.
Other Marks You May See
- BIS Hallmark: for gold and silver jewellery, with a 6-digit HUID code.
- FSSAI logo: for food businesses and packaged food.
- AGMARK: for graded agricultural produce, mostly voluntary.
- Ecomark: a voluntary BIS label for environment-friendly products.
- Legal Metrology declarations: name, address, net quantity and MRP on packaged goods. These are not a mark but are mandatory.
