FSSAI sets tolerance limits for antibiotics and veterinary drugs in milk, meat, poultry, eggs, fish and honey, and prohibits some outright. Drugs such as chloramphenicol and nitrofurans must not be present in any food-producing animal product, and their detection is the most common reason Indian shrimp and honey consignments are rejected abroad.
Residues come from treating animals without respecting the withdrawal period, from medicated feed, and in honey from treating bee colonies. Testing at procurement, at the plant and before export lets processors trace the problem back to the source.
