The FSS (Fortification of Foods) Regulations, 2018 set minimum and maximum levels for the micronutrients added to staple foods: iron, folic acid and vitamin B12 in rice and wheat flour, vitamins A and D in edible oil and milk, and iodine and iron in double fortified salt. Products that meet them can carry the +F logo.
Fortified rice kernels and fortified rice supplied to government schemes are tested batch by batch, as are premixes supplied to millers and oil refiners. Testing confirms both that enough nutrient has been added and that it is evenly mixed through the batch.
