Overview of Edible Ice Testing
- Tested by
- NABL-accredited partner lab
- Regulation
- FSSAI & IS 10500 water
- Typical turnaround
- 3–5 working days
- Sample needed
- 1 kg ice in a sterile bag
Ice is food. It must be made from potable water and handled hygienically, because nothing kills the bacteria it carries before it melts into a drink. Contaminated ice is a well-known cause of outbreaks, and FSSAI has directed that ice made for industrial cooling be coloured so that it cannot be passed off as edible ice.
Ice plants, hotels, bars, restaurants and caterers test the ice itself for coliforms, E. coli and other indicators, and test the source water against IS 10500. Swabs of ice machines, scoops and storage bins often explain a bad result.
